PATH’s Patricia Coffey and Elizabeth Abu-Haydar spent 9 years testing and refining designs for the uterine balloon tamponade (UBT)—a simple and affordable device that saves moms’ lives by stopping excessive bleeding after childbirth. UBTs already existed, but available models were too expensive for health systems in low- and middle-income countries. Today, thanks to Patricia, Elizabeth, and our manufacturing partners at Sinapi Biomedical, the ellavi UBT is available for just $7 dollars a unit in many of the places PATH works. The women of PATH are moving humanity forward. Invest in us today. For every dollar you donate, The lululemon Centre for Social Impact will match it with three more. Donate: https://lnkd.in/dHjYpfD3

🌍 From ontology to epistemology: The journey from humanitarian researcher into practice in the development sector. 🌍 On May 3, 2024, I had the honor of returning to one of my alma maters, the Hanken School of Economics. It was a privilege to address a dedicated audience of doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, along with faculty members. During the research seminar, I shared insights from my experience in public procurement and humanitarian logistics in public health. My role as Director for Partnerships in Europe at PATH allows me to contribute significantly to our mission of advancing global health solutions. My presentation focused on the critical role of health diplomacy and market intelligence in designing effective logistics for public health. It was inspiring to see so many academic fellows motivated to further their research and support substantial global contributions. #PublicHealth #GlobalHealthPartnerships #OperationsManagement #HealthSystems Diego Vega, Gyöngyi Kovács Hanken School of Economics, HUMLOG Institute

For the first 9 years of Mulenga Mweda-Chimfwembe’s life, she had malaria every Christmas. Today, she is a PATH scientist on an all-woman laboratory team at the National Malaria Eradication Centre in #Zambia. She and her colleagues are searching for weaknesses in the malaria parasite. From groundbreaking malaria research to affordable treatments for childbirth’s biggest killer (postpartum hemorrhage)—women of PATH are improving health and saving lives. Help them move humanity forward. For every dollar you donate today, The lululemon Centre for Social Impact will match it with three more. https://lnkd.in/dHjYpfD3 #Women4UHC

“The opportunity is here. We just need to have the political will to see it through.” Yesterday, PATH joined partners on Capitol Hill to discuss the importance of US leadership and investment in malaria elimination and childhood immunization—including the innovative new malaria vaccines available after decades of development—and the lifesaving impact it has for children around the world. In conversation with a panel of experts, the event highlighted for congressional staffers and community advocates: ➡the success of global collaboration on malaria vaccines, with numerous governments, organizations, companies, and individuals playing a unique and complementary role in moving the malaria vaccines forward. ➡the critical support the US government provides to strengthen health systems and help more children receive the care they need. ➡the urgent need for sustained investment to make up lost ground and accelerate progress towards ending preventable child deaths. Special thanks to our speakers David Walton, MD MPH, Theopista Masenge, Pavani Kalluri Ram, Mary Hamel, Chloe Cooney, Viorica Berdaga, and Chris Collins for your insights and event partners American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Global Citizen, The ONE Campaign, RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund, Shot@Life, UNICEF USA, and United to Beat Malaria. #VaccinesSaveLives #EndMalaria #Vaccines4UHC #HumanlyPossible

Uganda made history this year by becoming the first country in Africa to have two of its veterinary labs recommended for international accreditation by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). In a new Q&A, PATH’s Deogratias Agaba speaks with Project Director Derrick Mimbe and Diagnostics Specialist Thomas Ssemakadde, both of the USAID IDDS Project at PATH in Uganda, about the significance of accreditation and the labs’ crucial role in global health security and climate change: https://lnkd.in/dDEGdPbx ICF | World Organisation for Animal Health | USAID | FHI 360 | Mérieux Foundation USA | African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) | Abt Global | Gryphon Scientific LLC | APHL - Association of Public Health Laboratories

Twenty years ago, PATH’s Malaria Control and Evaluation Partnership in Africa (MACEPA) was established in Zambia with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Zambia and the National Malaria Elimination Centre, we’ve seen incredible progress towards a world where Zambia and its partners continuously expand the toolbox, evidence, resources, and political will to combat and eventually eradicate #malaria. A malaria-free Zambia is possible—and the lessons learned over two decades in the country are now exported to other malaria-endemic geographies, helping ministries of health develop impactful, data-driven strategies and strengthened systems to drive the fight against malaria within their countries. Despite Kenya’s remarkable results in malaria prevention and control, the country still faces challenges in providing high-quality and affordable health care services to people in remote and underserved areas. To address the challenge, Kenya is scaling up its use of digital health tools. PATH's Dominic Mutai, Margaret Mwakala, and Carolyne Njuguna share how Digital Square at PATH has supported Kenya’s digital community health strategy and malaria response, and how #DigitalHealth can accelerate the attainment of #UniversalHealthCoverage. Africa’s pharmaceutical industry was pushed by the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce its reliance on imports and substantially expand local manufacturing. The African Medicines Agency Treaty, adopted in 2019, is key to promoting local production and harmonizing regulatory frameworks across Africa. “AMA will ensure regulatory convergence and reliance, which promotes faster introduction of new and advanced medical products into the market, hence quicker access by patients at a lower cost,” said Johnpaul Omollo, PATH Regional Lead for R&D, Policy & Advocacy. As of this March, only 27 of 55 African countries have ratified the treaty. PATH has been working with national policymakers to provide technical support to help overcome delays and achieve full ratification. "The quest to provide universal health coverage by member countries will only be achieved through continental collaboration," said Dr. Nanthalile Mugala, PATH’s Chief of Africa Region.
